US Disputes Iran’s Account of Tanker Incident Near Hormuz

(MENAFN) The United States military rejects Iran’s account of an incident involving a Panama-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, denying that the vessel struck a naval mine.

According to reports, US Central Command says the El Gaia tanker is previously damaged by an Iranian missile last month, leaving it unable to operate. The vessel is then hit again by an Iranian drone over the weekend while sailing off Oman.

The tanker is now being towed by a regional partner, while US officials dismiss the Iranian account as an attempt to spread misinformation and intimidate.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, meanwhile, says the El Gaia explodes after hitting naval mines south of the Strait of Hormuz.
