Lebanese, Israeli Envoys Meet in Washington to Advance Talks
(MENAFN) The Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to Washington are set to meet Tuesday in the US capital in an effort to overcome a stalemate in negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv, according to reports.
Lebanese Ambassador Nada Mouawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter are expected to discuss the latest situation in Lebanon and possible steps to implement a framework agreement reached in June.
The meeting takes place after another round of Lebanon-Israel negotiations, initially planned for this week in Rome, is postponed until October.
Direct talks between the two countries begin in April through a US-sponsored meeting in Washington. The negotiations cover several issues, including maintaining a ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, border arrangements, and prisoners and missing people.
On June 26, Lebanon and Israel sign a US-backed framework agreement in Washington that calls for Israel to gradually withdraw from Lebanese territory while Lebanese Army forces deploy in areas vacated by Israeli troops.
