Germany Unveils New Steps Against Russian Sabotage Threats
(MENAFN) Germany will roll out fresh measures to counter espionage and sabotage efforts as the country continues confronting hybrid threats from Russia, the government announced late Monday following a meeting of the National Security Council.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said the council examined Germany's vulnerability to hybrid attacks in the wake of last month's drone incident at Leipzig Airport, which authorities allege was orchestrated by Russian intelligence.
"The National Security Council obtained a comprehensive picture of the situation," Kornelius said in a statement issued after the meeting, which was led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. "It assumes that Germany will remain a target of hybrid attacks by Russia."
According to Kornelius, council members continued discussions on how the federal government should respond to future hybrid incidents and revisited measures already outlined under Germany's existing action plan for defending against such threats.
"It decided on new steps against espionage and sabotage as well as for the protection of critical infrastructure," the statement read.
Kornelius noted that Monday's session capped weeks of intensive coordination among the ministries represented on the National Security Council.
Raw materials and supply chain risks
The council also signed off on measures aimed at reducing Germany's one-sided dependence on foreign suppliers in sectors critical to the economy and national security.
"In this context, it decided on a swift revision of investment-screening legislation and measures to ensure a diversified and resilient supply of critical raw materials," the statement said.
Kornelius added that the government's Raw Materials Fund remains the central financing mechanism under its broader Raw Materials Policy Action Plan.
Beyond supply-chain concerns, the National Security Council also revisited discussions on military and civilian defense readiness, along with the security implications posed by artificial intelligence.
