Iran Claims Fourth Drone Downed Near Hormuz in Days
(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Tuesday that it intercepted and "destroyed" two MQ-1 drones near the Strait of Hormuz, marking the fourth such drone the force claims to have shot down in recent days.
According to the IRGC, the drone was brought down east of the strategic waterway by a newly deployed, advanced air defense system operated by its Aerospace Force as part of Iran's integrated air defense network.
Earlier the same day, the IRGC reported intercepting a separate MQ-1 drone west of the Strait of Hormuz, though it offered no details on the aircraft's operator or the precise location of the incident.
That announcement followed a claim made just a day prior, when the IRGC said it had "destroyed" another drone of the same model, according to an Iranian state broadcaster.
The string of incidents comes as tensions escalate between Iran and the United States over access to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping corridor where the two nations have remained locked in dispute over navigation rights.
The broader conflict traces back to Feb. 28, when the US and Israel launched sweeping strikes against Iran, hitting government buildings, military installations, missile infrastructure, and air defense systems. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and American bases throughout the region.
Since then, the conflict has widened across the region even as diplomatic efforts continue in an attempt to bring the hostilities to an end.
