Bangladesh, Rosatom Agree To Expedite Power Generation From Rooppur Plant


(MENAFN- Bangladesh Monitor) Dhaka: Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev have agreed to expedite the remaining work on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to ensure electricity generation begins as soon as possible.
The two sides held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, on September 14, according to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The meeting focused on the latest progress of the Rooppur project and measures to ensure that electricity from the plant is supplied to the national grid at the earliest possible time.
Both sides agreed to accelerate construction work in line with the project's targets and move towards power generation as quickly as possible, the ministry said.
During the meeting, the science and technology minister stressed completing the remaining work at the earliest while maintaining international nuclear standards and the highest level of safety.
Likhachev assured the minister that Rosatom would continue providing uninterrupted technical and strategic support for the project.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, being built by Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, is the country's first nuclear power plant.
Following the meeting, Anam and Likhachev exchanged commemorative gifts as a symbol of the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Russia.
Members of delegations from both countries were present at the meeting.
