China's Jobless Rate Ticks Up to 5.3 Percent in August
(MENAFN) China's unemployment rate edged higher to 5.3% in August, rising 0.1 percentage points from the previous month, even as the broader economy held steady on production output and pricing, new data show.
Joblessness across the country's 31 major cities followed the same trajectory, climbing 0.1 percentage points month-on-month to reach 5.3% in August.
Workers at enterprises nationwide logged an average of 48.2 hours on the job each week during the period.
On the manufacturing side, value-added output among enterprises above the designated size threshold rose 5.2% year-on-year in August. High-tech manufacturing outpaced the broader industrial sector by a wide margin, posting a 16.7% annual jump in value-added output.
China's trade performance accelerated sharply, with total goods imports and exports surging 19.8% year-on-year in August.
On inflation, the consumer price index climbed 0.8% annually in August, while the producer price index — a gauge of factory-gate costs — rose 3.8% over the same period.
