Bangsamoro Awaits Results From Historic First Election
(MENAFN) Vote counting stretched into Tuesday in the southern Philippines' majority-Muslim Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, with final results still pending after the area's first-ever parliamentary elections, according to local media reports.
Unofficial and partial tallies placed the Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP) and the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) at the front of the pack as ballots continued to be counted, a broadcaster reported.
Monday's vote marks a turning point for the region, determining the makeup of its first-ever elected parliament and formally replacing the interim Bangsamoro Transition Authority that has governed since the peace process began.
Roughly 2.39 million registered voters cast ballots across 5,212 precincts region-wide.
The newly formed 80-seat parliament will be composed of 40 regional parliamentary party representatives, 32 district representatives, and eight sectoral representatives. To claim seats allocated through the regional party vote, parties must clear a 2.5% threshold of valid votes.
Local election observers indicated that complete results likely wouldn't be finalized until Wednesday, as counting remained underway in the Basilan Maluso area.
Once seated, the elected parliamentarians will be responsible for selecting the region's chief minister.
Separately, Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Mel Senen Sarmiento praised the vote as a "defining milestone" in the Bangsamoro peace process, according to a news agency, adding that the region had proven its capacity for democratic self-governance.
Sarmiento also pointed to the participation of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the elections, calling it a meaningful marker of the group's evolution from armed insurgency to a functioning democratic political party.
The vote traces its roots to the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, the accord that established the autonomous region and set in motion the shift from armed conflict to parliamentary rule.
