Suspected Sabotage Disrupts Dutch Train Network Nationwide

(MENAFN) Train services across large swaths of the Netherlands were thrown into disarray early Tuesday following a malfunction believed to stem from an act of sabotage, a broadcaster reported.

Railway infrastructure manager ProRail described the incident as a unique situation, saying the widespread disruption is suspected to have been deliberately caused.

"Materials that were deliberately placed there have been found at multiple locations on the track," a ProRail spokesperson said. "It appears to be a case of sabotage."

The spokesperson said pipes had been attached to the tracks, though further details were not provided.

Safety-system malfunctions were reported at a minimum of 20 separate locations, and ProRail emphasized that the fallout extended well beyond those sites, calling it "a nationwide impact."

"If train traffic is not possible in so many places, that also affects other places," the spokesperson explained.

The rail disruption is also expected to spill over into road traffic as commuters seek alternative routes.

Locating the source of the problem is complicating repair efforts. "We know which track sections are affected, but not the exact location. We therefore have to walk the entire route to locate and fix it," ProRail said.

Asked who might be responsible for the suspected sabotage, the spokesperson offered no answer, with ProRail's immediate focus centered on restoring normal service.
