Iranian Foreign Minister Heads to China for Talks Before Xi Visit
(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to travel to China on Wednesday for a one-day visit and talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, just days before Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States.
China’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that Araghchi and Wang will meet in Beijing as Tehran and Beijing continue consultations amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict involving Iran.
Wang last received Araghchi in the Chinese capital in May, shortly before a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Xi. The upcoming discussions will mark the second time the two foreign ministers have held face-to-face talks in Beijing since the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on Feb. 28.
The two officials were also in contact over the weekend when they attended the BRICS summit in New Delhi. Araghchi and Wang were seen speaking briefly during the gathering, ahead of their more formal meeting in Beijing.
The latest diplomatic engagement comes against the backdrop of a major escalation that began when the US and Israel carried out large-scale attacks on Iran, targeting government facilities, military installations, missile infrastructure and air defense systems.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against Israel and US military bases across the region. The confrontation subsequently spread to other parts of the Middle East, while diplomatic contacts have continued in an effort to bring the hostilities to an end.
