Bangladesh Court Sentences 7 Hasina Aides to Death

(MENAFN) A Bangladeshi court sentenced seven aides of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death Tuesday on charges of crimes against humanity tied to the 2024 monsoon uprising.

The verdict came from a three-member International Crimes Tribunal based in Dhaka, presided over by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. All seven convicted are currently fugitives living in self-exile in India and the US.

Those sentenced include Obaidul Quader, general secretary of Hasina's Awami League party; former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat; joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim; the party's youth wing chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and general secretary Moinul Hossain Nikhil; and student wing leaders Saddam Hussain, president, and Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, general secretary.

The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of half the assets belonging to Quader, Nasim, Arafat, and Parash, directing that the seized funds be distributed as compensation to families of those killed or injured in the July violence.

The ruling follows last November's death sentence handed down against Hasina herself by the same tribunal, also for crimes against humanity stemming from the deadly crackdown that ultimately toppled her government during the 2024 uprising.

According to the UN, at least 1,400 people were killed and thousands more injured during the unrest, as Hasina's security forces and Awami League supporters moved to suppress the protests.

Hasina remains in self-imposed exile in neighboring India after fleeing Bangladesh, though she has vowed to return to the country this December.

Across seven verdicts issued so far by the two tribunals, 68 people have been convicted and 22 sentenced to death. Of those charged, 18 remain at large while four are currently in custody.
