Migrant Boat Sinks Near Greek Island, Leaving One Dead, Many Missing
(MENAFN) One migrant dies and around 25 others remain unaccounted for after a vessel carrying 77 migrants sinks Sunday off the southern coast of the Greek island of Gavdos, according to reports.
Greek Coast Guard and Frontex ships are involved in an ongoing search and rescue effort, supported by aircraft and a Coast Guard helicopter. The operation is being directed by Greece’s Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center.
Authorities rescue 51 migrants, who are now safe aboard vessels participating in the operation. Another migrant is recovered from the sea and pronounced dead.
The rescued group is expected to be taken to migrant reception facilities in Paleochora and Agia Galini, both located on the Greek island of Crete.
Gavdos, Greece’s southernmost island, sits on a migration route used by people traveling from the northern African coast toward Europe. The area has previously witnessed incidents involving migrant boats.
