McConnell Back in Senate After 3-Month Recovery From Fall
(MENAFN) Sen. Mitch McConnell made his return to the Senate floor Monday in a wheelchair, casting his first vote since a serious fall in June ended roughly three months earlier — a milestone in his ongoing recovery.
"Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June. I’m really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues," the longtime Kentucky Republican said on X.
McConnell described his recovery as “long and often frustrating,” noting that lingering effects from childhood polio have complicated the process. He said he remains in physical therapy on his doctors' advice.
“I’m still not quite back to 100%,” he said, adding that he has assured Senate Majority Leader John Thune he will do his utmost to show up for "tough votes" whenever Republicans need him.
McConnell was seen leaving his Washington, DC, residence on Monday — the first reported time he had left home since his extended absence from the Senate began. Upon arriving on the Senate floor, he was greeted warmly by his colleagues.
McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in US history, is set to retire when his current term ends in January.
