Houthi Missile, Drone Strikes Injure 13 in Saudi Arabia
(MENAFN) Thirteen civilians sustained injuries after Yemen's Houthi group launched ballistic missile and drone attacks on three Saudi cities, the Saudi-led coalition announced early Tuesday.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said the strikes hit Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif on Monday, leaving victims with injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Seven homes and two vehicles sustained damage as well, he said.
Al-Malki accused the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and said the coalition would take steps to deter further attacks under its right to self-defense.
Separately, Saudi Arabia's General Directorate of Civil Defense issued "potential danger" alerts early Tuesday across six cities — Jeddah, Yanbu, Taif, Abha, Jazan, and Alula — before later announcing the danger "has passed."
"For your safety, continue following #CivilDefense instructions and avoid gathering and filming. In case of emergency, call (911)," the directorate added.
The alerts followed remarks Monday from Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, who said Saudi warplanes had carried out 54 strikes across five Yemeni provinces over the prior 24 hours. Saree said F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets were involved and warned the strikes “would not go unanswered.”
Earlier that day, the Houthis claimed a large-scale missile and drone assault on King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait and threatened to widen their operations against Saudi Arabia.
The exchange marks the latest escalation in clashes between forces loyal to Yemen's internationally recognized government and the Houthis, which have intensified since early July after a prolonged period of relative calm.
Yemen has been mired in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, along with several provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
