Over 200 Israeli Filmmakers Rally Behind Gaza War Documentary
(MENAFN) More than 200 Israeli filmmakers have put their names to a petition defending the creators of NAZA, a documentary built on testimony from Israeli military and intelligence sources about the army's conduct in Gaza, Israeli media reported Monday.
Among the signatories are prominent directors Ari Folman, Shlomi Elkabetz, Ran Tal, and Michal Aviad.
“The central role of art and journalism is to hold a mirror up to the society in which they exist,” the petition said.
The show of support comes as the film's creators, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, face mounting criticism and threats following the documentary's win of the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.
Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar has gone so far as to call the filmmakers' work an act of "treason," vowing to push for the revocation of their Israeli citizenship — though he lacks the unilateral authority to do so. Under Israeli law, stripping citizenship would require a formal legal process involving the interior minister and the courts.
NAZA, a joint production of the British newspaper The Guardian and JW Films, draws on interviews with 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence insiders discussing surveillance practices, target selection, and strikes carried out in Gaza. Its title comes from a Hebrew military abbreviation meaning "collateral damage" — a reference to the projected civilian death toll factored into an attack.
Those interviewed describe reliance on artificial intelligence and mass surveillance to identify targets, along with strikes greenlit despite expected civilian deaths. Abraham and Szor have said the film is concerned with institutional policy, chain-of-command orders, and operational practice — not isolated misconduct by individual soldiers.
The Israeli army has pushed back forcefully, disputing the film's claims and casting doubt on testimony from anonymous sources whose identities, ranks, and areas of responsibility could not be independently verified. It also denied that artificial intelligence drives target selection, maintaining that strike decisions and authorizations rest with human personnel operating under military directives.
Abraham and Szor previously collaborated on the Academy Award-winning documentary No Other Land, working alongside Palestinian filmmakers Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal.
