Rosatom, IAEA Chiefs Discuss Zaporizhzhia Plant Safety
(MENAFN) The head of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom and the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held talks in Vienna on the safety situation at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Rosatom announced Monday.
Alexey Likhachev and Rafael Grossi met on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference, according to Rosatom's press service.
During the discussion, Likhachev told Grossi that conditions at the plant and in the nearby Ukrainian city of Enerhodar have sharply worsened since late April, Rosatom said. Over the past four and a half months, more than 750 attacks involving Ukrainian drones and artillery have struck the area, killing 20 people — including nine plant employees — and wounding more than 100 others, the corporation reported.
"The two officials paid particular attention to recent strikes on fuel trucks carrying supplies for the plant," it noted.
Likhachev emphasized that the targeted trucks were transporting diesel fuel urgently needed to maintain the plant's nuclear safety.
Grossi, for his part, said the IAEA stood ready to explore ways it could help facilitate similar fuel deliveries, according to Rosatom. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continued cooperation with Russia on ensuring the plant's safety and expressed his readiness to keep the dialogue going.
