SCO Anti-Terror Body Condemns Fresh US Strikes on Iran
(MENAFN) The Shanghai Cooperation Organization's regional anti-terrorism body condemned renewed US strikes on Iran on Monday, reaffirming its longstanding opposition to military action against the Islamic Republic.
The declaration came during the 46th meeting of the Council of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO RATS), held in Islamabad and chaired by Pakistan, according to a statement from Islamabad's Foreign Ministry.
Delegations from Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan attended, alongside representatives of the SCO RATS Executive Committee. The gathering focused on pressing regional security issues on the current international agenda.
"The SCO RATS Council condemned the new military attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran and reaffirmed the SCO's previously expressed position on this issue," the statement said.
The council also extended condolences to Iran's government and people over the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as reported in the statement, as well as to the families of others killed. It reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, while backing efforts to de-escalate tensions and restore peace and stability across the region.
The SCO RATS Council chairmanship formally transferred from Pakistan to Russia during the meeting.
The latest flare-up follows fresh US strikes on Iranian military targets earlier this month, which Iran met with missile and drone attacks targeting US-linked positions across the region.
