Japan, IEA Chief Discuss Global Energy Security in Tokyo
(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with visiting International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol in Tokyo on Monday to discuss global energy security, according to a statement from Japan's Foreign Ministry.
Takaichi said Japan hopes to promote its POWERR GX initiative on the world stage, aiming to strengthen the resilience of the global energy supply and demand structure. The initiative is designed to bolster the stability of Japan's fossil fuel supply while accelerating and reinforcing the country's so-called Green Transformation (GX).
Takaichi renewed Japan's appeal to the international community to advance three core pillars of global energy security: ensuring free and transparent energy trade, deepening international coordination on oil stockpiling, and strengthening cooperation between energy-producing and consuming nations.
Birol, in turn, praised Japan's energy policies, including POWERR Asia and POWERR GX, and pledged that the IEA would work closely with Tokyo to safeguard global energy security and maintain stable energy markets.
The two officials also discussed diversifying energy supply sources and strengthening supply chain resilience for critical minerals, agreeing to deepen cooperation between Japan and the IEA amid an increasingly volatile global energy landscape.
Birol additionally met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, where the two discussed expanding the presence of Japanese personnel within the IEA and reinforcing the resilience of critical mineral supply chains. Both sides confirmed their commitment to continued close cooperation.
