Italian President Highlights Technology Risks to Humanity

(MENAFN) Italian President Sergio Mattarella has cautioned that rapid technological advances, while creating new opportunities, could weaken the importance placed on human beings and deepen existing inequalities.

In a birthday message to Pope Leo, Mattarella highlighted both the potential and risks associated with emerging technologies.

"New technologies are opening up unprecedented possibilities, but they also risk jeopardizing the centrality of the human being, widening existing social and economic disparities," Mattarella said.

The Italian president also reflected on what he described as a difficult period for the international community, marked by growing instability and multiple global challenges.

"The threat, if not the use, of force is once again prevailing, while contempt for rules, growing inequalities and the multiple harmful consequences of climate change are causing suffering for many innocent people," Mattarella noted.

Mattarella said people around the world who are committed to peace and human dignity continue to look to Pope Leo's guidance. He praised the pontiff's calls for nations and societies to recognize their responsibilities while acknowledging human limitations and vulnerability.

He also referred to the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which urges people to accept human fragility "without considering them an error to be corrected."
