Yemeni Forces Down 3 Houthi Drones as Airstrikes Hit Taiz
(MENAFN) Yemeni government troops intercepted three Houthi drones in Taiz and Shabwa provinces on Monday, even as warplanes pounded the group's positions and military hardware in western Taiz.
According to the government-aligned Giants Brigades, one drone was shot down over the Kahbub front near Bab el-Mandeb. Two additional first-person-view (FPV) attack drones were intercepted over Bayhan before they could reach their intended targets.
In a separate development, Yemen's military-run September Net website reported that airstrikes struck Houthi fighters, equipment and vehicle convoys near Mokha and the Al-Barh Bridge in western Taiz. No casualties or damage have been reported from either incident.
The escalation comes as Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree alleged that Saudi warplanes launched 54 separate strikes over the past 24 hours, targeting Taiz, Lahj, Al-Jawf, Marib and Hajjah provinces. Saree said the strikes involved F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets flying out of Saudi airbases in Khamis Mushait and Taif, and he vowed retaliation.
Saudi officials have not yet responded to Saree's claims, and the Houthis have likewise not addressed the government forces' account of the drone interceptions.
The clashes mark a sharp escalation in hostilities between Yemen's internationally recognized government and Houthi forces since early July, breaking a stretch of relative calm that had held for years. Yemen has remained mired in conflict since 2014, when Houthi fighters seized the capital, Sanaa, along with several other provinces — prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene militarily in 2015 on behalf of the internationally recognized government.
