UK Prime Minister Suspends Duties After Father Dies
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Andy Burnham cancels his official engagements for two days following the death of his father, Roy, at the age of 86, according to his office.
"The PM has cancelled engagements for today and tomorrow due to the passing of his father, Roy," a Downing Street spokesperson said.
Roy Burnham had reportedly been living in a care facility while suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Burnham previously spoke about his father's inability to know that his son had become prime minister, describing it as a source of sadness while also crediting his family with helping shape his achievement.
"That’s a sadness because he would be (proud). The way I look at it, it’s his achievement as well. A whole family achievement although he doesn’t know it."
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia that gradually affects memory, cognitive abilities and a person's capacity to perform everyday tasks.
There is currently no cure for the disease, although researchers continue to work on treatments and potential therapies.
