Elon Musk Renews Warning Over Artificial Intelligence Risks
(MENAFN) Elon Musk says his concerns about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence began more than a decade ago, as debate over the safety of increasingly advanced AI systems intensifies.
“I was thinking about AI safety long before 2014,” Musk said on Monday, pointing to his long-standing involvement in discussions about the risks posed by powerful AI technologies.
He cited his connection to philosopher Nick Bostrom's 2014 book, Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies, noting that he contributed to the work and received acknowledgment in its foreword.
The book explores the possible consequences of machines eventually exceeding human intelligence and argues that developing reliable control measures could be critical before highly advanced systems emerge.
Musk also referred to a post he made in August 2014 recommending Bostrom's book, in which he described advanced AI as “potentially more dangerous than nukes.”
His latest remarks come as leading figures in the technology industry increasingly discuss whether development of frontier AI should be slowed because of safety concerns.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently proposed allowing independent safety experts to examine AI companies' safeguards and assess whether they are adequately protecting against potential risks. The proposal has received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk.
