Israeli Settlers Expand Presence in Jordan Valley
(MENAFN) Twenty Israeli settler families have taken control of Palestinian land in the Jordan Valley as settlement expansion continues across the occupied West Bank, according to reports citing local sources and rights organizations.
The developments come alongside other incidents in the occupied territory, where Israeli forces reportedly shot a Palestinian near Hebron and detained a Fatah official after opening fire on his vehicle in Tulkarem.
The families moved into Bitron, a newly established agricultural settlement, on Monday. The settlement was inaugurated ahead of the Jewish New Year and is among 13 settlements that Israel's Security Cabinet approved for separation from nearby settlements as part of a process to grant them independent status.
Bitron has been described as the first agricultural settlement established by Israel in roughly two decades.
The move follows a decision announced on March 23, 2025, when Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the Security Cabinet had endorsed a proposal to separate 13 settlements in the West Bank, including Bitron, from neighboring settlements.
“Another step toward normalizing settlement,” Smotrich said at the time, referring to the plan to recognize the 13 settlements as independent communities.
