UK PM Defends Union After Devolved Leaders Sign Declaration
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government has reaffirmed its support for maintaining the United Kingdom after the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland signed a joint declaration calling for preparations for possible constitutional change.
A spokesperson for Burnham said the prime minister remains firmly committed to the union and intends to focus on addressing challenges shared across the UK's four nations.
"The prime minister is committed to delivering change across all four nations of the United Kingdom and believes strongly in the union," Burnham's spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also argued that the country functions most effectively when its nations cooperate on common priorities instead of becoming divided by constitutional disputes.
"The prime minister will continue to ease pressures on household finances, and delivering greater economic security, rather than engaging in constitutional debates or further referendums."
The comments followed the signing earlier Monday of a memorandum of understanding by the leaders of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The agreement calls on the UK government to take steps toward preparing for potential changes to the country's constitutional arrangements.
