European States Tighten Penalties Over Settlement Trade
(MENAFN) Several European countries are moving to impose tougher legal measures on individuals and businesses involved in trading goods linked to Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian territory, with potential prison sentences reaching several years, according to reports.
Norway is preparing legislation aimed at restricting trade in settlement products, with the proposed rules allowing prison terms of up to three years for individuals or companies involved in such transactions.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said he expects parliament to approve the legislation in its proposed form, pointing to the deteriorating situation in the occupied West Bank as a reason for stronger action.
“Yes, I really think so, and the arguments have become stronger as the situation in the West Bank has worsened,” Eide said in response to a question on the issue.
“There are many other countries that will do the same thing that the government has already proposed through this law,” he added.
The Netherlands is also reportedly developing similar legislation, with violations potentially carrying prison sentences of up to six years.
In addition, a Dutch measure prohibiting the import, purchase or sale of products originating from Israeli settlements is expected to come into force on Sept. 22, according to reports.
