NATO Officer Faces Security Scrutiny Over Dating App Relationship
(MENAFN) A senior Spanish naval officer is removed from a NATO military facility in Britain after his relationship with a woman he met through Tinder raises concerns over a possible connection to Russian espionage, according to reports.
The officer had been in a relationship with Janina White, a 49-year-old British-Polish dual national born in the former Soviet Union. Her background later prompted allegations that she could be acting on behalf of the Kremlin, reports said.
The Spanish commander was stationed at Allied Maritime Command (Marcom) at Northwood headquarters in Hertfordshire before being suspended and sent back to Spain in 2025. The facility plays a key role in monitoring Russian submarines and naval vessels operating near UK waters, as well as tracking Russian oil tankers linked to the country's "shadow fleet."
As concerns surrounding the relationship grew, the officer's NATO access credentials were withdrawn. The base commander also prohibited him from returning to the facility while intelligence officials examined the allegations.
White, who resides in Romford in east London, has rejected accusations that she was involved in espionage. She said she had been subjected to unfair treatment because of her Russian background and confirmed that she is no longer romantically involved with the Spanish naval officer.
