Japan’s Centenarian Population Surpasses Milestone Amid Aging Trends
(MENAFN) Japan’s population of people aged 100 and above has exceeded 100,000 for the first time, reaching a record level that further highlights the country’s rapidly aging demographic structure.
The number of centenarians stood at 107,677 as of Sept. 1, an increase of 7,914 from the previous year. The latest figure represents the 56th consecutive annual rise in the number of people reaching the age of 100 or older.
Women made up the overwhelming majority of Japan’s centenarian population, accounting for 87.6% of the total. The figures underscore the significant gender gap in longevity as the country continues to record increases in the number of people living to advanced ages.
An additional 54,294 people are expected to reach their 100th birthday during fiscal 2026, marking an increase of 1,984 compared with the previous year. Japan recorded an average of 87.51 centenarians for every 100,000 residents.
Among the country’s oldest citizens is Fuyo Kishimoto, a 114-year-old woman from Kyoto who was born on December 20, 1911. Hikaru Kato, a 112-year-old man from Kumamoto born on May 2, 1914, is the country’s oldest man.
Japan’s centenarian population has grown dramatically since official data collection began in 1963, when only 153 people aged 100 or older were recorded. The number passed 1,000 in 1981, reached more than 10,000 in 1998 and exceeded 50,000 in 2012.
The latest figures come as Japan continues to experience exceptionally high life expectancy. In 2025, average life expectancy stood at 87.33 years for women and 81.35 years for men, reflecting the country’s long-standing position among nations with some of the world’s oldest populations.
