Yemeni Forces Intercept Houthi Drones as Fighting Escalates
(MENAFN) Yemeni government forces said Monday they had intercepted three Houthi drones in Taiz and Shabwa provinces as airstrikes targeted Houthi positions and military equipment in western Taiz, highlighting renewed escalation between the rival sides.
The government-aligned Giants Brigades said one drone was brought down near the Kahbub front, close to the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, while two first-person view (FPV) attack drones were intercepted in Bayhan before they could reach their intended targets.
The forces said the drone interceptions were carried out as military activity intensified in several areas. Separately, reports indicated that airstrikes struck Houthi positions, gatherings and military vehicles near Mokha and the Al-Barh Bridge in western Taiz. No casualties or material damage were reported in connection with the strikes.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, meanwhile, claimed that Saudi warplanes had conducted 54 strikes over a 24-hour period across Taiz, Lahj, Al-Jawf, Marib and Hajjah provinces. He said the attacks involved F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets operating from Saudi airbases in Khamis Mushait and Taif, and warned that the group would retaliate.
Saudi authorities had not immediately responded to the Houthi claims, while the Houthis had not issued a response to the Yemeni government forces’ account of the drone interceptions.
The latest developments come amid a renewed rise in confrontations between forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government and the Houthis. Fighting between the sides has intensified since early July following a prolonged period of relative calm, raising concerns over a broader deterioration in the country’s security situation.
Yemen has remained mired in conflict since the Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened the following year in support of the internationally recognized government, turning the conflict into a wider regional confrontation that has persisted despite repeated diplomatic efforts and periods of reduced fighting.
