EU Promotes AI Growth While Upholding Safety Standards
(MENAFN) The European Union says it remains committed to advancing artificial intelligence across the bloc while requiring companies to follow established safety and security requirements.
European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said during a briefing in Brussels on Monday that the EU welcomes the introduction and use of AI services, provided they operate in accordance with the bloc’s AI Act and its safeguards.
"We are for innovation in Europe. We welcome AI services in Europe, as long, of course, this is done fully in line with the AI Act and the safeguards that we have put in place," Regnier told reporters.
He emphasized that the EU wants access to cutting-edge AI technologies but will not lower its security requirements in pursuit of faster innovation.
"We are all in favor of having innovative and the latest models in the European Union, but we are not compromising on our security standards," he added.
His comments came in response to questions about a call from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for AI developers to reduce the speed of frontier AI development, amid increasing concerns over the challenges of managing more sophisticated systems.
Regnier said the EU has an active role in shaping the development of artificial intelligence and characterized the bloc as a "front runner" in establishing protections governing the creation and use of AI systems.
He also said the EU’s AI Act is now fully enforced, with authorities having already issued their first requests for information as part of measures designed to monitor and secure compliance with the legislation.
