Venezuela’s Interim President Plans UN General Assembly Visit

(MENAFN) Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodriguez is reportedly preparing to travel to New York next week to attend the United Nations General Assembly, according to reports citing people familiar with the plans.

If the visit goes ahead, Rodriguez would become the first Venezuelan head of state in several years to participate in the annual gathering of world leaders. She is also expected to hold a number of high-level meetings during her time in New York, although the plans have not yet been publicly announced.

US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have indicated that they could meet with Rodriguez during the General Assembly if she makes the trip. Rubio said last week that such a meeting would “probably” take place if Rodriguez attends the gathering, while noting that he has spoken with her several times since January.

Rodriguez’s potential visit comes amid major political changes in Venezuela following the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro by US forces on Jan. 3 after months of escalating tensions.

Following Maduro’s capture, Rodriguez, who had served as vice president and oil minister, was sworn in as interim president. The transition was followed by several significant developments in the country, including changes to its flagship oil legislation and the release of a number of political prisoners.

A visit to the UN General Assembly would give Rodriguez an opportunity to engage directly with foreign leaders and officials as Venezuela continues to navigate the political changes that followed Maduro’s removal.
