Inter Milan Stage Wild Comeback, Rally Past Udinese 5-3
(MENAFN) For the second straight Serie A outing, Inter Milan clawed back from a two-goal deficit, this time overwhelming Udinese 5-3 at the San Siro on Monday to keep their unbeaten start to the season intact.
The visitors delivered an early shock, racing to a 2-0 lead inside the first quarter-hour.
James Abankwah got things moving in the ninth minute, rising to head in a short corner delivery from Unai Gomez. Inter's Josep Martinez was beaten again just seven minutes later, as Jurgen Ekkelenkamp turned home Keinan Davis' low, close-range cross.
Inter clawed one back in the 26th minute when Carlos Augusto unleashed a long-range strike that found the bottom corner. Ten minutes later, Nicolo Barella leveled the score — recovering his footing after slipping inside the box before slotting a precise angled finish past Maduka Okoye.
The hosts completed their comeback in the 57th minute, with Marcus Thuram tapping in a low cutback from Andy Diouf. Francesco Pio Esposito then put Inter ahead for good in the 67th, ghosting into space before slotting a composed finish beyond Okoye.
Substitute Ange-Yoan Bonny piled on a fifth in the 80th minute, pouncing on the rebound after Okoye initially parried his shot. Udinese did manage a stoppage-time consolation through Idrissa Gueye, who capitalized on a swift counterattack.
It marked the second consecutive match in which Inter erased a two-goal hole — they'd also trailed 2-0 against Napoli before winning 3-2 on a stoppage-time strike from Lautaro Martinez.
The result leaves Inter tied on points with league leaders Roma, who defeated Torino 2-0 earlier in the day, with goal difference the only thing separating the two clubs at the top of the table.
