The vibrant sounds of drums and brass echoed along San José's Central Avenue on Monday morning as 10 local schools stepped out of their classrooms to fill the heart of Costa Rica's capital with patriotic music and traditional dances for the annual Band Festival.

Organized by the Municipality of San José in coordination with the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), the open-air event drew large crowds of commuters and pedestrians who paused along the boulevard to film the performances on their smartphones. Clear, sunny weather favored the morning showcase, giving each institution a 30-minute spotlight in the city's Historic Center.

Empowering Youth Through Culture & Civic Space

Speaking with El Observador, San José Mayor Diego Miranda emphasized that creating these civic and artistic platforms for students is a cornerstone of the municipality's youth outreach strategy.

According to Miranda, strengthening ties between local government and schools provides constructive outlets for students, keeping them engaged in positive community programs and away from organized crime and social violence.

A Call for National Unity

In his closing remarks, Mayor Miranda issued a broader call for national collaboration, urging state institutions to set aside differences and work in unison toward common goals for the country's progress.
