Christie's Offers 31 Picasso Prints, Including Rare Roque Portraits

(MENAFN- USA Art News) More than 30 prints by Pablo Picasso are on view at Christie's London through September 23 as part of the auction house's“Prints & Multiples” sale and exhibition. The collection comprises 31 pieces and is expected to achieve between £2.8 million and £4.1 million ( $3.8 million and $5.53 million ).

Among the prints are three portraits of Jacqueline Roque, Picasso's second wife and his final partner until his death in 1973. This October will mark 40 years since Roque's passing. The earliest work, Profil de Jacqueline au foulard ( 1955 ), carries an estimate of £30,000 to £40,000 ( $40,500 to $54,000 ). Murray Macaulay, head of prints at Christie's Europe, described this linocut as“very rare.” It depicts Roque wearing a scarf, with an almost skeletal appearance.

A second print, Portrait de Jacqueline I, II, III & IV ( 1956 ), is estimated at £20,000 to £30,000 ( $27,000 to $40,500 ). This piece, also exceptionally rare with only three editions made, shows Picasso illustrating Roque's portrait across four different blocks and was intended for an unreleased poetry book. The final work, Portrait de Jacqueline accoudée ( 1959 ), is considered by Macaulay to be Picasso's most“sophisticated” print. For this piece, the artist began to develop his own linocut technique, known as the reductive method, which involves creating layers from a single linocut block to reveal colors underneath.

Prints remain a significant category for Christie's, even if the sums realized do not always match those of major evening sales. In 2025, Christie's reported $70 million in global print sales and sold Rembrandt's Arnout Tholinx, Inspector ( 1656 ) for £3.1 million ( $4.18 million ) on December 3, making it the most expensive Old Masters print sold to date.
