Dubai, UAE – September 2026: Wego, the number one travel app and the largest online travel marketplace in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), has published its annual Middle East Traveller Destination Leaderboards, revealing how travel demand, destination rankings and booking behaviour shifted across the region during the first eight months of 2026.
Drawing on Wego search and booking data from 1 January to 31 August 2026, compared with the same period in 2025, the report provides a detailed view of where Middle East travellers are going, which destinations are gaining ground and how changes in air access, pricing and traveller behaviour are reshaping the regional travel landscape. This year's edition also introduces a new analysis of how travel patterns among Gulf nationals differ from those of the wider Gulf market.
Travel intent remained resilient as bookings responded to disruption:
One of the clearest findings from Wego's data is the difference between travel intent and completed bookings during periods of operational disruption.
Within a week of airspace restrictions and flight disruptions beginning in late February, flight bookings from the Gulf fell from above the 2025 average to 63% of the prior-year level, while search demand remained comparatively resilient. Bookings recovered to prior-year levels in early May before further disruption in June, with peak-summer travel patterns beginning to normalise from July.
The divergence between searches and bookings suggests that travellers continued planning and exploring trips even when their ability to complete those journeys was affected, highlighting the value of search behaviour as an early indicator of returning travel interest.
Ross Veitch, CEO and co-founder of Wego, said:“Travel demand in the Middle East proved far more resilient this year than the headlines suggested. When airspace closed, people did not stop planning trips, searches held steady even as bookings halved. What travellers lost was the ability to fly, not the intention to. Access, not appetite, sets the ceiling on destination performance in this region.
“The second shift matters just as much. The Gulf market and Gulf nationals are two different audiences with two different maps, and a single corridor between Saudi Arabia and Egypt now carries almost a fifth of all travel abroad by Gulf nationals. The destinations that plan around that distinction will win share from those still treating the region as one audience.”
A stable top, with significant movement beneath it:
Despite the shifts seen during 2026, the top of Wego's destination ranking remained remarkably stable. Egypt ranked first for a twelfth consecutive year, while India and Saudi Arabia retained second and third place respectively.
More substantial movement occurred further down the leaderboard. Nepal recorded the largest climb, rising eight places, while China, Vietnam, Sudan and Kenya each moved up seven positions.
The longer-term picture reveals even more significant changes. Over the past decade, Pakistan has moved from twenty-first to fourth place.
Air access also emerged as an important factor behind several of this year's largest gains. China's rise coincided with expanded visa-free access for GCC nationals, while Vietnam benefited from additional direct connectivity between the Gulf and Hanoi.
The pattern reinforces one of the report's central findings: destinations that make themselves easier to reach are better positioned to convert regional travel interest into demand.
Travel disruption affected destinations differently:
The impact of 2026's travel disruption varied considerably by destination and region.
Search demand for Azerbaijan declined 39% year on year, while Georgia declined 29%. Spain, despite being considerably farther from the Gulf, declined by just 3%, illustrating that geographic distance alone does not explain how destinations performed during the period.
Across Europe, search demand declined 20%, while the Indian Subcontinent was the fastest-growing region in Wego's analysis, up 19% year on year, led by Pakistan at 34%.
Within MENA, Saudi Arabia remained comparatively resilient, with search demand declining 15.8%, against larger declines across several neighbouring markets.
Egypt, meanwhile, maintained its position as the region's most searched international destination for a twelfth consecutive year.
Gulf nationals reveal a different travel map:
For the first time, Wego's annual report separates the wider Gulf travel market, which includes the region's large expatriate population, from the travel patterns of GCC nationals based on passport nationality. The analysis reveals significant differences between the two audiences.
The Saudi Arabia–Egypt corridor alone accounts for 19.6% of international travel by Gulf nationals in Wego's dataset, highlighting the scale and importance of travel between the two markets.
Travel patterns also vary considerably by nationality. Among Saudi travellers in Wego's analysis, 56.8% of flights are domestic. Among their international journeys, 84% extend beyond the GCC, illustrating a broad international travel footprint.
Airfares normalised while domestic hotel demand strengthened
Pricing also shifted significantly during the year.
Average airfare rose from March and peaked in June at 23% above the prior-year level, before returning to within approximately 1% of the previous year by August.
Hotel behaviour moved in a different direction. Domestic hotel bookings increased 37% year on year, while international hotel bookings declined 9%. Overall hotel bookings increased 17%.
The shift points to a greater role for domestic stays during a period when international travel faced greater disruption, adding another dimension to how travellers adapted their plans during the year.
Trip structure also changed. The share of international flight searches for one-way journeys rose from 57% before the disruption to 76% in March, before moving closer to earlier levels by August, demonstrating how quickly booking behaviour can respond when travel conditions change.
What Wego is watching next:
Looking towards the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, Wego expects connectivity, ease of access and travel costs to remain among the most important factors influencing destination performance.
Markets that strengthened their position through structural improvements, including expanded visa access or new direct air routes, may be better placed to retain those gains as regional travel patterns normalise.
At the same time, the difference between the travel behaviour of Gulf nationals and the wider resident population creates an important opportunity for destinations, airlines and tourism businesses to develop more targeted strategies for the region.
