Iran Says Thousands Arrested Over January Protests
(MENAFN) Iranian authorities have detained around 6,000 people in connection with anti-government demonstrations and unrest that swept the country in January, according to Iran’s police chief.
Ahmadreza Radan said the detainees were allegedly involved in what authorities described as an attempted coup and accused them of helping countries considered hostile to Iran during the unrest on Jan. 8-9. “We will not release these people, except those who express regret and repent,” he said.
The protests initially erupted on Dec. 28, 2025, at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar amid a steep decline in the value of the Iranian rial and mounting economic difficulties. The demonstrations later spread to several cities, becoming more intense on Jan. 8-9, when authorities said some protesters engaged in violence and attacked security personnel as well as public and private property.
Iranian officials have accused the United States and Israel of backing the unrest, claims that both countries have rejected. Authorities said the disturbances resulted in widespread damage to government and private facilities, including public buildings, banks, police stations, schools, mosques, residential properties and vehicles.
Meanwhile, Iran’s judiciary announced that authorities had confiscated 240 properties and other assets linked to individuals accused of acting against the country or supporting governments viewed as hostile to Tehran, including some people residing outside Iran. Officials also said 182 bank accounts had been frozen as part of the measures.
The judiciary said the asset seizures and financial restrictions targeted individuals accused of activities such as spreading propaganda against Iran and cooperating with Israel or other countries regarded by Tehran as hostile.
Iranian authorities have put the number of people killed during the January unrest at 3,117, including civilians and security personnel. Rights organizations, however, have reported substantially higher death tolls.
