Israel Threatens Anyone Approaching Strategic Ridge in Southern Lebanon

(MENAFN) Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Sunday that anyone approaching the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon would be “eliminate[d],” as Israeli forces prepare to take control of the strategic area.

Katz said Israeli troops had killed Hezbollah members and destroyed tunnel infrastructure at the site, adding that preparations were underway to prevent the group or any other armed faction from restoring its presence there.

He described the ridge as part of what Israel refers to as the “yellow line” and a self-declared “security zone” extending roughly 700 square kilometers (270 square miles) inside Lebanese territory.

Katz also said Israel would maintain its military position and would not withdraw or redeploy its forces until Hezbollah is disarmed throughout Lebanon.

Lebanese authorities and Hezbollah did not immediately issue a response to the Israeli statements.

On Thursday, Israeli forces carried out a major explosion at the Ali al-Taher ridge, saying the operation destroyed a Hezbollah tunnel network and other infrastructure stretching for more than two kilometers (1.24 miles).

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later referred to the location as the “largest Iranian site outside Iran.”
