Malaysia’s Prime Minister Urges Muslim Societies to Keep Pace With AI
(MENAFN) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called on Muslim scholars and communities to strengthen their knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, warning that a failure to keep up with technological change could increase their dependence on outside influences.
“Without knowledge, we will fail. Without understanding artificial intelligence, we will be colonized,” Anwar said during an award ceremony Sunday in Kozhikode, in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
He made the comments after receiving the inaugural Excellence Award established by the Sheikh Abubakr Foundation at the Markazu Saquafathi Sunniyya in Karanthur.
Anwar stressed that religious scholars must understand the “new realities and challenges of the present time,” particularly developments involving modern technology, scientific advances, digital transformation and AI.
At the same time, he emphasized that technological progress should remain aligned with religious and ethical principles.
“We need the knowledge. We need the expertise,” he said, stressing that Muslim societies should ensure technological advancement continues to safeguard their “faith and moral values.”
He also cautioned that emerging technologies could carry values that gradually weaken religious and ethical standards, particularly in societies that lack the expertise needed to understand, influence and guide technological development.
