Trump Plans Broad Talks with Xi as He Defends Tariffs on Chinese Cars
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump says his upcoming White House meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping will cover a wide range of issues, including trade and the automotive sector, while also potentially touching on Boeing, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, artificial intelligence and US defense manufacturing.
Trump told reporters Sunday that he expects to discuss “almost everything” with Xi during their scheduled Sept. 24 meeting.
The US president also defended his administration’s steep tariffs on Chinese vehicles, arguing that the measures have prevented Chinese cars from gaining access to the American market.
“I’m the one that kept them out,” he said, referring to tariffs that range between 100% and 150%. Trump contrasted Washington’s policy with the situation in Europe, which he said was being “decimated” by Chinese cars.
When asked whether he anticipated securing an agreement under which China would purchase Boeing aircraft, Trump expressed confidence in his negotiating ability.
“I get every deal,” he said.
Trump was also asked about reports that Chinese entities may have supplied Iran with satellite imagery showing US and allied military bases in Jordan.
The president said China conducts intelligence operations in much the same way as the United States, acknowledging that both countries engage in espionage activities.
“They do what we do,” he said. “When they say that China spies on us, I say, you’re right, and we spy on them too.”
