Bangsamoro Holds Landmark Parliamentary Election in Southern Philippines
(MENAFN) Voters in the Muslim-majority Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have begun voting in the region’s first parliamentary election, marking a major development in its long-running effort to strengthen self-governance and consolidate peace.
Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. local time on Monday and are scheduled to remain open until 7 p.m., with early results expected later in the evening.
Around 700 candidates representing 13 regional political parties are competing for seats in the Bangsamoro parliament, the region’s main legislative institution.
Nearly 2.4 million registered voters are eligible to participate in the landmark election, which is widely viewed as an important step following decades of armed conflict in the southern Philippines.
Voters are choosing 80 members of the regional parliament. The seats are divided among 40 representatives from political parties, 32 district representatives and eight sectoral representatives.
The election is being conducted using automated counting machines that were previously used during the Philippines’ midterm elections in May 2025.
The Bangsamoro region has a population of approximately 5 million people, with Muslims forming the majority of its residents.
