Israeli Forces Shell Southern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Israeli forces carried out artillery and machine-gun fire against several areas in southern Lebanon on Monday despite a ceasefire agreement, according to reports, as military activity continued across parts of the region.
The outskirts of the Al-Deir neighborhood in Nabatieh al-Fawqa were subjected to intermittent Israeli artillery shelling during the morning, with the attacks occurring in separate rounds rather than as a continuous barrage.
Israeli forces also opened machine-gun fire toward the town of Beit Yahoun in the Bint Jbeil district, adding to the military activity reported in southern Lebanon. Overnight, artillery fire also struck areas on the outskirts of Hadatha.
There were no immediate reports providing details on possible casualties or the extent of material damage resulting from the latest attacks. Authorities and local sources continued to assess the situation in the affected areas.
The latest incidents come amid continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon despite the ceasefire arrangement. Lebanese figures indicate that Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed nearly 4,400 people and wounded around 12,500 others, reflecting the scale of casualties recorded during the ongoing violence.
The attacks have continued despite the US-mediated “framework formula” signed by Beirut and Tel Aviv on June 26. The agreement provides for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from areas under occupation in southern Lebanon in exchange for the deployment of Lebanese army forces in those locations.
The ceasefire arrangement was intended to reduce military tensions and establish conditions for the Lebanese army to assume a greater security role in areas affected by the conflict. However, continued Israeli strikes and fire have kept tensions high across southern Lebanon.
Israel continues to occupy parts of southern Lebanon, with some areas having remained under Israeli control for decades and others coming under occupation during the 2023-2024 war. Israeli forces have also expanded their presence inside Lebanese territory during the ongoing military campaign.
The latest shelling therefore adds to the continuing instability in southern Lebanon, where residents remain exposed to military activity despite the existing ceasefire and diplomatic efforts aimed at securing an Israeli withdrawal and reducing tensions along the border.
