Microsoft Chief Calls for Controlled AI Development, Independent Oversight
(MENAFN) Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella is calling for stronger human control over advanced artificial intelligence and a measured approach to developing increasingly powerful systems.
Nadella said Sunday that the pursuit of superintelligence should only continue if AI remains focused on benefiting humanity and operates under meaningful human oversight.
"Any pursuit of superintelligence has to be grounded in the core principle that if the AI we build is not helping humanity and under human control, it's not worth pursuing," Nadella wrote on X.
He also endorsed "deliberate pacing needed to get alignment right" and supported the use of "embedded evaluators" that could monitor advanced AI systems from within research laboratories.
Nadella urged technology companies and researchers to move beyond broad discussions about AI safety and develop practical mechanisms that can be implemented during the creation and deployment of advanced models.
He further warned that governance "cannot be controlled by a handful of entities, but must have broad representation across the ecosystem, countries, and fields, including academia." He added that a healthy frontier ecosystem requires "both closed and open-source models" to thrive.
Nadella also stressed the importance of giving businesses control over their proprietary expertise and data. He said companies should maintain authority over their "unique and tacit knowledge" while adopting continuous-learning systems that allow them to manage their own model weights rather than becoming dependent on a single AI developer.
