Bangladesh Measles Death Toll Rises Amid Expanding Outbreak

Four of the latest deaths were reported in the capital Dhaka, while the Dhaka division has recorded 482 fatalities since the outbreak began. Bangladesh, which has a population of around 175 million, has faced difficulties in controlling the outbreak amid declining vaccination coverage. Health authorities have been working to increase immunization levels as concerns grow over the loss of population-wide protection against measles.
The country had historically maintained herd immunity against the disease, but that protection has weakened in recent years as vaccination rates declined. The reduced coverage has left more children and communities vulnerable to transmission, contributing to the resurgence of measles.
In response to the outbreak, Bangladesh's Health Ministry has expanded vaccination efforts beyond the country's routine immunization program. Since April, nearly 19.48 million children have received vaccines through a special campaign designed to increase protection against measles.
The additional immunizations are part of efforts to rebuild population immunity and slow transmission as authorities continue monitoring new infections and deaths. The scale of the campaign reflects the urgency of addressing the decline in vaccination coverage that has contributed to the outbreak.
