Germany Expands Naval Reconnaissance Fleet Amid Baltic Security Concerns
(MENAFN) Germany plans to strengthen its naval intelligence capabilities by ordering another reconnaissance vessel, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Monday, as Berlin seeks to improve its ability to monitor developments across the Baltic Sea.
Pistorius announced the planned addition during a keel-laying ceremony for the third ship of the same class at the Baltic port of Wolgast. He said a draft budget for the fourth vessel had already been submitted to parliament for approval, paving the way for Germany to expand the reconnaissance fleet.
The minister highlighted the ships' ability to detect signals and sounds that may not be identified by other vessels. He described the vessels as important instruments for obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of activity at sea and said they are designed to gather and assess a broad range of maritime signals.
The planned expansion comes as Germany continues to place greater emphasis on monitoring developments in the Baltic region. German authorities have increasingly focused on maritime surveillance as concerns grow over damage to critical infrastructure beneath the sea and heightened Russian military activity.
Undersea cables and energy connections in the Baltic Sea have suffered damage in recent years, increasing pressure on regional governments to strengthen their ability to detect and assess activity around strategically important maritime infrastructure.
German officials have therefore argued that the navy requires more advanced capabilities to monitor the Baltic Sea and identify developments that could pose security risks. The additional reconnaissance ship is expected to contribute to those efforts by expanding Germany's capacity to collect and analyze maritime information.
The decision also reflects Berlin's broader effort to improve naval surveillance capabilities as security conditions in the region have changed since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022.
