Yemen Cuts Off Iranian Goods Amid Rising Regional Tensions
(MENAFN) Yemen’s internationally recognized government has approved a sweeping ban on the import and circulation of Iranian goods and products, as tensions continue to rise between authorities and the Iran-backed Houthi movement.
The measure was approved by the National Committee for Regulating and Financing Imports during a meeting led by Central Bank of Yemen Governor Ahmad Ghaleb, who also chairs the committee.
The committee said the decision was adopted “in accordance with the requirements of the higher national interest.”
Government bodies have been directed to begin taking the necessary steps to enforce the measure, with each authority responsible for implementation within its legal powers and under existing regulations.
No specific date has been announced for the ban to come into force, and authorities have not disclosed which Iranian products will be covered by the restrictions.
The move comes as fighting between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and the Houthis intensifies. Yemeni authorities have repeatedly accused Iran of providing financial and military backing to the group, allegations that Tehran has rejected.
