Wildfire Spreads Across Croatia’s Brac Island, Forces Mass Evacuations
(MENAFN) A major wildfire continues to spread across Croatia’s Brac island, forcing nearly 700 people to leave affected areas as firefighters work to contain the blaze and protect nearby communities.
Fire crews succeeded in preventing the flames from overrunning the town of Milna after it faced a serious threat overnight. Emergency teams have continued efforts to control the fire while assisting residents and others being moved to safer locations.
Two people were injured during the evacuation, according to reports. An elderly woman fell from a boat while being taken away from the danger zone and nearly drowned. Her condition was initially considered life-threatening, but she is now reported to be stable.
A young man also sustained injuries after inhaling smoke during the evacuation operation.
The wildfire has expanded significantly since Saturday night, with satellite imagery showing flames advancing toward Milna, the southern coastline of Brac and the Blaca desert area.
The latest estimates put the affected area at around 56 square kilometers, equivalent to approximately 5,600 hectares.
Brac has a total area of about 395 square kilometers, meaning the territory affected by the wildfire accounts for roughly 14% of the entire island.
