White House Adviser Dismisses Concerns Over AI Market Fallout

(MENAFN) White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett has played down concerns that growing warnings from technology executives about the risks of artificial intelligence could unsettle financial markets.

Hassett said Sunday that he did not anticipate recent discussions about AI safety leading to significant market disruption. He described an argument presented by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei as a "very thoughtful letter" calling for a measured pace of technological development while requiring companies to prove that their AI systems are safe.

"I don't expect that that's what's going to happen," Hassett told CNN, referring to the possibility of market turmoil resulting from the warnings.

The economic adviser also supported Amodei's proposal to have independent experts monitor companies during the training of advanced AI models. He compared such oversight personnel to bank supervisors who monitor financial institutions.

Hassett acknowledged that increasingly capable AI systems could create security threats, including autonomous tools being used to undermine cybersecurity. However, he said the "far bigger risk is that a malevolent actor has access to an AI that's better than the one we have that can protect us," while specifically highlighting concerns that foreign actors could use advanced AI to develop biological weapons.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump rejected the idea of slowing the country's AI sector. He argued that preserving America's technological edge over China is essential to maintaining its position as a global leader.
