EU Backs AI Innovation but Draws Line on Safety Compliance
(MENAFN) The European Commission said Monday it supports innovation and the rollout of artificial intelligence services across Europe, but made clear that companies must fully comply with the bloc's safety and security regulations.
"We are for innovation in Europe. We welcome AI services in Europe, as long, of course, this is done fully in line with the AI Act and the safeguards that we have put in place," Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier told reporters during a midday briefing in Brussels.
"We are all in favor of having innovative and the latest models in the European Union, but we are not compromising on our security standards," he added.
Regnier's comments came in response to a question about a proposal from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has called on AI companies to slow the pace of frontier AI development amid mounting concerns over the ability to control increasingly advanced systems.
He said the EU was "definitely playing a role" in shaping AI development, positioning the bloc as a "front runner" in establishing safeguards for how artificial intelligence is built and deployed.
According to Regnier, the EU's AI Act is now fully enforced, with authorities already having issued their first requests for information as part of broader compliance efforts.
Asked whether Anthropic had reached out to the commission regarding its proposal to slow frontier AI development, Regnier said he was unaware of any such contact and emphasized that the commission would not engage in bilateral discussions of that kind.
The debate over AI development gained fresh momentum following Amodei's statement urging AI firms to ease the pace of model development amid growing unease over controlling advanced systems. Billionaire Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman both voiced support for Amodei's position on their respective social media accounts.
