EU Backs AI Innovation, Insists Developers Follow Safety Rules

(MENAFN) The European Commission said Monday that it remains committed to supporting artificial intelligence innovation and expanding AI services across Europe, while emphasizing that companies must comply with the European Union’s safety and security requirements.

"We are for innovation in Europe. We welcome AI services in Europe, as long, of course, this is done fully in line with the AI Act and the safeguards that we have put in place," European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier told reporters during a briefing in Brussels.

The commission stressed that Europe wants access to the latest AI technologies but will not weaken its regulatory standards in pursuit of faster technological development.

"We are all in favor of having innovative and the latest models in the European Union, but we are not compromising on our security standards," he added.

Regnier was responding to questions about a proposal from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has urged AI companies to slow the development of frontier models amid increasing concerns about whether increasingly powerful systems can remain under effective human control.

The commission spokesperson said the EU has an active role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence and described the bloc as a "front runner" in establishing safeguards governing the development and use of advanced AI technologies.

He also said the EU’s AI Act is already fully in force and that European authorities have begun sending their initial requests for information as part of efforts to monitor compliance and ensure that companies meet the bloc’s regulatory requirements.

When asked whether Anthropic had contacted the European Commission regarding Amodei’s proposal to slow the development of frontier AI, Regnier said he was not aware of any such communication. He added that the commission would not conduct bilateral discussions with individual companies on that particular matter.

Concerns over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence have intensified as developers continue to release increasingly capable models. Amodei’s recent call for companies to moderate the pace of frontier AI development has added to a wider debate over the potential risks associated with systems that could become increasingly difficult to predict or control.

The proposal has also received support from prominent figures in the technology industry, including billionaire Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who expressed backing for Amodei’s position through their social media accounts.
