Germany Orders Fourth Navy Reconnaissance Ship Amid Baltic Tensions
(MENAFN) Germany will commission a fourth new reconnaissance ship for its navy, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced Monday at a keel-laying ceremony for the third vessel in the same class, held at the Baltic port of Wolgast.
Speaking at the Rheinmetall shipyard, Pistorius said a draft budget covering the additional vessel has already been submitted to parliament for approval, according to German media reports.
Pistorius emphasized that the ships possess unique surveillance capabilities, capable of picking up signals and sounds that other vessels cannot detect. He described them as vital tools for building a clearer picture at sea, noting that they collect and evaluate a wide range of maritime signals.
The push for expanded reconnaissance capacity reflects longstanding concerns among German officials, who have repeatedly argued that the navy requires stronger monitoring tools for the Baltic Sea — a region that has seen damage to undersea cables and energy links, alongside a marked rise in Russian military activity since the war in Ukraine began in 2022.
