China Blasts AI "Fear-Mongering" as US Tech Leaders Call for Slowdown
(MENAFN) China on Monday pushed back against what it termed "fear-mongering" over artificial intelligence, after several leading US technology executives voiced support for slowing the pace of frontier AI development and bolstering safety safeguards.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said AI development concerned the "common well-being of all humanity," urging nations to "promote its open, inclusive and universally beneficial development."
Guo cautioned that "fear mongering," confrontation and engaging in "malicious competition" would disrupt global AI governance, which serves no one's interests.
He made the remarks while fielding a question about statements from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Elon Musk, and other technology executives calling to slow AI advancement, as well as Amodei's claim that China's progress in the field threatens US national security.
Amodei's essay, We Must Pace the Frontier, which argues for slower development of the most advanced AI systems paired with stronger protective measures, has won backing from several of the industry's most influential voices.
Musk offered a succinct endorsement, saying Amodei was "right." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, meanwhile, said pacing frontier development had become a major subject of recent discussions at his company.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said Amodei's proposal pointed toward the "right path forward."
Amodei contended that rapid AI advances could heighten a range of risks — from humans losing control of increasingly capable systems to cyberattacks, biological threats, and economic disruption — and warned that commercial competition could intensify those dangers further.
