MBS Meets US CENTCOM Chief Amid Houthi Escalation in Yemen
(MENAFN) Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed US Central Command commander Adm. Brad Cooper and his delegation in Jeddah on Monday, according to the kingdom's state news agency.
The talks covered the broader US-Saudi relationship along with the latest developments across the region. Saudi Minister of State, Cabinet member and National Security Adviser Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban also took part in the meeting.
The high-level sit-down comes as tensions mount between Yemen's government forces and Houthi rebels, who have escalated strikes targeting energy infrastructure inside Saudi Arabia. Just last week, operators temporarily halted the East-West pipeline as a precaution after drone strikes launched from Iraq struck the Riyadh and Medina regions.
The conflict in Yemen has raged since the Houthis overran the capital, Sanaa, along with several other provinces in September 2014 — a takeover that triggered a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervention in March 2015 to back the internationally recognized government.
According to a news outlet, the crown prince has pressed US President Donald Trump for military support against the Iran-backed Houthis, who are reported to have gained ground in recent clashes.
